“His path was marked By the stars in the Southern Hemisphere
And he walked the length of his days Under African skies”. Paul Simon
Welcome to the African adventures of Rich and Kat. We arrived safely this evening in Johannesburg Tambo airport after a 15 hour direct flight from Atlanta. And that was after a flight from Jacksonville to Atlanta. So quite a long day. We are staying in an airport hotel tonight because tomorrow we depart from here to our safari at Chitwa Chitwa. I promise lots of photos and fun once I recover a bit from our journey.
Some observations so far-
1) it took 4 Woolworth ladies and a good 40 minutes to get our SIM card and data deployed. Woolworth stores are apparently ubiquitous in South Africa- so if you wondered what happened when they all closed down in small town USA, well I guess they moved here. And started selling SIM cards and groceries as well as more familiar Woolworth fare.
2) we are going to have reset our expectations to Africa Time- I don’t mean the time difference (though we are 6 hours ahead and that will take some adjustment too) - I mean that nobody here is in a rush. You don’t really realize how immediate and available everything is in the US until you spend some time in slower paced countries
3) the vending machines have some different things. Care for some chutney potato chips? Or maybe beef flavored ones instead? They also sell beer in plastic bottles, and it’s a very popular Woolworth purchase.
Ok- off to bed. More tomorrow when our trip really gets started, and my eyes are open.
